Esplanade des Invalides in front of the University of London Institute, Paris

All the anniversary évenéments will be taking place at the University of London Institute of Paris, at 9-11 rue de Constatine, in the 7th arrondissement, one minute walk away from the métro station Invalides. ULIP, which shares an elegant building with the British Council, is situated immediately opposite the Esplanade des Invalides, just below the river Seine, and is about 2 kilometers, or a 20 minute stroll away from the old Beat Hotel on rue Git-le-Coeur.

ULIP is easy to get to by taxi or métro from the Gare du Nord; taxis cost between 10 and 15 euros and take between 15 and 40 minutes depending on time of day; the métro (line 4), which can get very busy at rush hour, is nine stops from Gare du Nord to St. Michel.

Saint Germain des Prés and the Quartier Latin are hardly what they were back in the 1950s and ’60s, but traces of an indelible Parisian atmosphere and style still remain here and there in cafés and hotels, bars and tabacs, and little side streets like Git-le-Coeur… The immediate area around ULIP is mainly impressive government buildings like the Assemblée nationale (hence, gendarmes on every corner), there’s a great view of the Tour Eiffel to the west, and it’s only a short walk to the Champs-Élysées and the Louvre on the other side of the Seine.

Where to stay? We’d suggest anywhere to the east and/or south of ULIP — basically, the 6th, 7th, 14th and 15th arrondissements, comprising the Left Bank and Montparnasse — and there’s no shortage of hotel and pension information online. You might want to check out the prices of what was once the Beat Hotel, but you’ll almost certainly not want to pay them…
